Virgin Active is a global health club with world class facilities.

This CBD project is a 4,200sqm club built on Levels 2 and 3 of a large shopping mall. Facilities include a 25m pool, large spa and sauna areas and studios accommodating a range of activities including Bikram yoga, boxing, pilates, sleep pods and cycling. There is also a weights area, cardio machine floorspace and an indoor climbing wall. Completing the fitout are the amenities and locker facilities and staff breakout quarters together with an internet café.

The project was extremely challenging due to tight time constraints and the very restricted access to the floors for materials and equipment deliveries.

The main building challenges encountered were, the need to waterproof all wet areas – pool, spa and extremely large shower blocks - situated above the retail area of the shopping centre; implementing a mechanical design to allow varying temperature controls to the different studios, pool area, spa and sauna; and having to crane in major plant and equipment from Pitt St Mall with a 300 tonne crane into the plant room of the Mid City Centre.
