The Cutaway Fitout is a major culture and event venue delivered by the NSW Government in collaboration with FDC Construction and fjcstudio, transforming a former subterranean concrete structure beneath Barangaroo Reserve into a world‑class venue for events, exhibitions and performance.
Handed over in early 2024 as a large, cavernous concrete shell, the site is defined by its dramatic scale and a 14‑metre‑high sandstone wall carved directly into the bedrock. The project realises a long‑held vision for the Cutaway, converting an underutilised space into a fully serviced cultural facility capable of hosting around 3,000 patrons.
Key works included the construction of the internal mezzanine structure, feature cladding to the main entrance, skylight installation nearing completion and fitout works progressing across the venue. The works include significant structural strengthening of the existing bunker, the construction of two new internal concrete levels, and a full services and infrastructure upgrade to support large‑scale events, staging, AV and back‑of‑house operations.
A defining architectural feature of the project is the installation of 13 bespoke sculptural timber ‘trees’, rising approximately 17 metres and wrapping around existing concrete columns. Guided by principles of Connection to Country and developed through deep collaboration with First Nations stakeholders, the forms transform the original rectilinear geometry into an organic, welcoming interior inspired by the Damun (Port Jackson Fig) and the memory of Salt Water Country. Each tree comprises up to 115 individual timber elements and is engineered to deliver high acoustic performance through integrated perforated linings and insulation.
The Cutaway integrates a diverse mix of public, cultural and operational spaces, including a main event hall, gallery and exhibition areas, a dedicated First Nations education space, foyer and pre‑function areas, management offices and comprehensive back‑of‑house facilities including a commercial kitchen. High‑performance acoustics, natural light optimisation and seamless circulation are embedded throughout the design.
Aligned with Barangaroo’s sustainability principles, the project has achieved strong environmental outcomes, including more than 90 per cent of construction waste diverted from landfill, a 50 per cent reduction in carbon emissions, and the use of sustainably sourced materials.
